Europe's Frontier Economies was the topic of a discussion attended by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili at the World Economic Forum in Davos. When the Georgian official addressed the audience, he described the Georgian Government's vision of new trade and energy routes, said the Prime Minister's press service.

The economic, political and cultural interdependence of Europe's frontier economies is continuously increasing. The opportunities and challenges are becoming more and more intertwined. Strengthening of communication routes across this vast area is a key for sustainable development of the wider Eurasian region. The region needs fast, cost-effective and reliable channels for delivering goods from China to Europe," Prime Minister Garibashvili said in his speech.

In this regard, the PM emphasized the relevant example of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway project, which aimed to establish a direct route between Georgia and Turkey, thus connecting Europe with Asian countries. Once operational, it will reduce the period for shipment from China to European markets by more than half and shorten the distance by almost 7,500 km.

In his speech Garibashvili also discussed the historic decision of the stage two development of the Shah Deniz field triggered plans to expand the South Caucasus Pipeline through Azerbaijan and Georgia, to construct the Trans Anatolian Gas Pipeline (TANAP) across Turkey and to construct the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) across Greece, Albania and Italy.

In addition, Garibashvili pointed out Georgia's geopolitical and geo-economic location, as well as trade liberalisation and issues related to integration into the world's leading markets.

Besides the Prime Minister of Georgia, the discussion panel included the Prime Minister of Latvia, the Foreign Affairs Minister of Ukraine, Deputy Secretary General of the Swiss Federal Assembly, Vice President of the European Commission, cabinet members from different countries and representatives of large companies.

At the talk Garibashvili invited the participants of the discussion to the Silk Road Forum, and annual high level meeting of all interested states and international organisations due to be held in Tbilisi.

The Georgian leader introduced the idea of establishing the Tbilisi Silk Road Forum at the 69th Session of the UN General Assembly last year. This initiative aimed to revitalise the historic Silk Road and enhance partnerships between neighbouring nations in four spheres of cooperation: transport, energy, trade and people-to-people contacts.
