What is Georgia’s role in the Silk Road-Economic Belt project in China?

Developing Georgia’s trade and economic relations with China were key topics discussed when officials from both countries met each other in China today.

Georgia’s First Deputy Foreign Minister Davit Dondua and the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Public Republic of China Cheng Guoping spoke face-to-face about Georgia’s role in the Silk Road-Economic Belt project and the upcoming Silk Road Forum, scheduled to be held in Tbilisi later this year.

In a Foreign Ministry statement outlining the visit, Dondua touched on several aspects of Georgian-Chinese relations, including the recently accelerated positive trend of cooperation in the trade-economic field. 

The sides spoke about cultural and humanitarian issues. The parties were especially focused on new perspectives of partnership in the project New Silk Road-Economic Belt project,” read the statement.

The Silk Road-Economic Belt is the land-based component that together with the oceanic Maritime Silk Road forms One Belt, One Road, a Chinese government economic development framework for primarily integrating trade and investment in Eurasia. 

The sides also discussed the future reforms of the United Nation’s Security Council and exchanged positions,” the Ministry added. 

In the framework of the visit, Special Task Ambassador of the Georgia’s Foreign Ministry Davit Kereselidze held a meeting with the host country’s Foreign Affairs International Economic Relations Department chairperson.

Georgia’s role in the Silk Road-Economic Belt project was also discussed by the parties, as was the Tbilisi Silk Road Forum, scheduled for Tbilisi on September 15-16.
