Members of Georgia’s Muslim community ended their day of fasting by sharing a meal with the country’s Prime Minister in a move to encourage religious tolerance in Georgia.

Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili hosted members of the country’s Muslim community last night for their traditional Iftar meal and spoke to the guests about the cultural tradition of religious tolerance in Georgia and their importance in today’s society.

Garibashvili told the group they were an "inseparable part” of the state and noted they played an important role as a "bridge to the Islamic world” for Georgia’s other communities.

"We might be of different faith but this difference in combination with our brotherhood is exactly what represents the wealth of our country,” Garibashvili told his guests.

The Prime Minister was thanked for the reception by the Mufti for Western Georgia Beglar Kamasidze and the Sheikh of All Georgia Ramin Igidov.

Kamasidze said the Prime Minister’s "just, moral and spiritual” attitude to the subject of religious communities would benefit the cause of a "more harmonious and healthy society”.
