The bodies of four tourists have been recovered following an avalanche on a mountain in the Svaneti region.

Two of the deceased were from Germany and two were French nationals. There was one French survivor.

The group of five extreme sportsmen were free-riding on a mountain in the Ushguli village, which sits at the foot of Shkhara – the highest mountain in Georgia – when the avalanche fell on Thursday.

Initially two people died in the incident, two were missing and one person survived and informed emergency services.

Emergency services and rescue teams located two bodies yesterday but had to call off the search due to bad weather.

The search resumed today and the bodies of the two missing tourists were recovered today.

Georgian officials said the tourists had been warned about a high risk of avalanche danger.

The sole survivor and the four deceased have been transferred to the Georgian capital city Tbilisi.

The Shkhara mountain is the third highest peak in the Caucasus region.
