Georgian delegation returns home from the US

Georgia’s Prime Minister has finished his first successful official visit to the United States of America, which included a meeting with President Barack Obama.

Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili ended his official duties today and is set to return home later this evening.

In America, Georgia’s young leader, who was appointed the country’s Prime Minister three months ago, held high level meetings with representatives from all branches of the US Government, including the White House, State Department and Capitol.

Especially notable was the unexpected meeting with US President Barack Obama, who promised bursting support to Irakli Garibashvili and his Government and thanked him for the friendly and reliable partnership and cooperation,” the Prime Minister’s press centre stated today.

As well as meeting President Obama, Garibashvili and other members of the Georgian delegation also met US Vice President Joe Biden and US Senators.

At the gathering with Vice President Biden, Garibashvili spoke about the renewed process of Russian troops installing barbed wire fences along the occupation lines at Tskhinvali and Abkhazia - breakaway regions of Georgia.

The President and Vice President of United States reaffirmed the US supported Georgia's sovereignty.

Following the meeting, the White House released a document stating that the United States supports [Georgia’s] political, economic and defense reforms,” the press centre announced.

The Georgian delegation, led by Garibashvili, held bilateral meetings with more than 30 influential American politicians. Among them were: US Secretary of State John Kerry, Senators John McCain, Roy Blunt, Carl Levin, Jeff Sessions, Dick Durbin and members of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The Georgian delegation also met Congressmen Michael Conway, William Kiting, Ted Poe, Adam Kinzinger, Adam Smith, Eliot Engel, Ed Royce, Ted Deutsche, Nancy Pelosis, Steny Hoyer, Michael Conway, Michael Turner and Buck McKeon.

The press centre said the first results were available and US Congressmen from the Democratic and Republican parties initiated a resolution to support Georgia joining NATO.

The draft of resolution titled "Confirmation of the United States in support of Georgia’s joining NATO” has already been submitted to Congress for review.

Meanwhile, during his seven-day official visit, Georgia’s Prime Minister also met with the chief executive of the Millennium Challenges Corporation (MCC) Daniel Yohannes, representatives of National Democratic Institute, US trade representative Michael Froman, President of World Bank Jim Yong Kim and other American businessmen.

Furthermore, the US-Georgia Strategic Partnership Charter plenary session held, where the US Secretary of State announced the United States of America was ready to increase support to Georgia in various directions.

In his first official visit to Washington as Georgia’s Prime Minister, Garibashvili delivered his first public speech at the Atlantic Council and highlighted the most pressuring issues facing the country.

Garibahsvili spoke about his Government's priorities, the recent developments in the Caucasus region, including the Ukraine issue, as well as Georgia's western ambitions and relationship with the United States and Russia.

The PM also led a public speech at Columbia University where he presented the Government's vision and priorities.

Following a meeting with Senator John McCain, Garibashvili and members of the Georgian delegation laid a wreath at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Arlington National Cemetery.

At the end of his visit, the Prime Minister met with representatives of the Georgian Diaspora and provided them detailed information on the ongoing reforms in Georgia.

Georgia’s premiere strongly stressed that his desire was for Georgian people to have the opportunity to serve in their homeland and unlock their potential in their own country.

The Prime Minister and the Georgian delegation are will depart America later today and return to Georgia.
