Georgian peacekeepers led humanitarian operation in Afghanistan

Georgian soldiers serving in a peacekeeping mission in the Afghan province of Parwan have successfully completed a humanitarian operation to support the vulnerable in Afghanistan.

The Georgian soldiers, who are based at the Bagram Air Base, completed the mission with United States (US) military forces and the Afghan National Security Forces.

During the operation the Georgian military met and talked with the population of the village. Similar operations aim to foster relationship between locals and the peacekeeping contingent.

Specifically, Georgian soldiers of the 51st Battalion of the V Infantry Brigade provided locals with housewares in one of the villages in the Parwan province.

Georgia continues to be one of the biggest contributors to the NATO mission in Afghanistan. As of November 1, 2014, the Georgian Armed Forces took over the force protection of Bagram Air Base – the biggest airbase in Afghanistan.

Afghan children were excited to see Georgian peacekeepers in their village.

The 51st Battalion is the first Georgian unit to fulfil a peace support operation in Afghanistan in the final stage of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) mission.

The military contingent is tasked with ensuring safety at the Bagram Air Base.
