The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania has slammed the new alliance between Russia and Georgia’s breakaway Abkhazia region and expressed its firm support to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders.

A statement published on the Ministry’s official website said: "We concur [yesterday’s] statement of the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, stating the so-called treaty "violates Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, contradicts principles of international law and the international commitments of the Russian Federation, including the 12 August 2008 Agreement and its Implementing Measures of 8 September 2008”.

The statement said Lithuania stressed the importance of the Geneva International Discussions in ensuring the security and stability in the region and reaching for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
