The Government of Japan has slated the new alliance between Russia and Georgia’s breakaway Abkhazia region.

The island nation publically announced it condemned the deal and expressed its firm support to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders.

The de-facto president of breakaway Abkhazia Raul Khajimba and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the controversial ‘Alliance and Strategic Partnership’ deal in Sochi on November 24.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan authorised its local Embassy in Georgia to issue a statement on December 1.

The statement highlighted that peaceful resolution to the conflict in Georgia's occupied regions Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) were "essential” for peace and stability of the country and the entire South Caucasus region.

"The above-mentioned points are clearly expressed in the joint statement between Japan and Georgia on Solidarity for Peace and Democracy, signed on October 24 by Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe and President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili during his visit to Japan,” the statement read.
