Workers build temporary Russia - Georgia road through Dariali

Emergency groups are attempting to build a temporary road in Dariali Gorge to enable vehicles to pass through the area, which was cut off when a devastating landslide blocked the valley on May 17.

Experts and representatives from almost all Government agencies spent much of the day and evening yesterday discussing a range of technical issues, including the possibility of building a temporary road in the gorge.

It was agreed a temporary road would be built, and work to complete this task will begin today.

Authorities said after the meeting, they divided duties and agreed on a plan on how to continue cleaning-up the disaster zone.

They also agreed on how to protect the safety of the workers who are continuing to search for the seven people who remain missing.

One person died in the landslide, which happened in Dariali Gorge, north Georgia on Saturday morning.

It is believed one million cubic meters of land mass flew into Tergi River during the landslide.

Several trucks were found squashed under rubble during search efforts two days ago. Rescue workers assume two more trucks are still stuck under the land mass.

Rescuers saved 170 people in the immediate hours following the landslide and are continuing to search for the remaining missing people.
