A senior inspector of the Kvemo Kartli Police Department of the Georgia’s Interior Ministry has been charged with harassment of a woman in the city of Rustavi near the country’s capital Tbilisi, the Special Investigation Service said on Monday.

The Service said the Ministry employee had maintained “non-consensual communication” with the victim, threatened her with release of their communication and controlled her movement by stalking her between September 2022 and February 2023.

On receiving the victim’s report, the Special Investigation Service carried out investigative procedures [and] [b]ased on the obtained evidence, the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has charged the inspector”, the body added.

The crime is punishable up to two years in prison.

Official statistics published by the SIS has shown 62 cases of law enforcement officers involved in “mistreatment and violent crimes” identified by the state body since its founding in 2022.
