Georgia's Special Investigation Service accused three law enforcement officers of improper treatment and violent crimes between the period of January and March of 2023 in the country’s capital Tbilisi and western regions of Adjara and Samegrelo, the Service said on Thursday.
As the investigation established, one of the accused law enforcement officers, a Senior Detective, had illegally arrested and physically assaulted an individual to obtain some information. The officer was arrested and charged with the crime punishable by five to eight years in prison.
The Prosecutor's Office of Georgia filed charges against the inspector of the Security Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, who had physically and verbally abused his wife, threatening to kill her. The accused was arrested as a preventive measure, facing imprisonment for a term of one to three years.
An employee of the Interior Ministry’s Department of Special Tasks, who had physically assaulted a woman, systematically established unwanted communication with her and illegally monitored the victim, was arrested as a preventive measure. The accused was given bail of ₾5000 (about $1,940) and was dismissed from his position.
The Service stressed it “intensively continued” the investigation of improper treatment, abuse of authority and other violent crimes.
