Georgian athlete Mzechabuk Makharadze emerged from hundreds of competitors at the Karate International Championships in Kiyv, Ukraine with two gold medals on the weekend.

Makharadze, among a number of competitors from Georgia at the event, scored the winning results in the individual kata section of the senior category.

With about 500 wrestlers representing up to 20 countries at the championships, the Georgian faced fierce competition for adding to his wide tally of silverware at international competitions.

Hosted by the Shotokan Karate-Do Federation of Ukraine, the championships saw Makharadze earn his medals on Sunday.

The prizes are a latest addition to Makharadze's collection of 30 gold, silver and bronze medals earned at international competitions since 2000.

These include a gold at last year's International Karate Cup in Tehran and a silver at the 2015 world championships in Tokyo. Kiyv is also a happy hunting ground for the Georgian, with four medals earned at the 2015 European championships in the capital city.

The world- and European championship-winning athlete also works as senior instructor at Georgia's Shotokan Karate-Do Federation.
