Four sailors, including one Georgian citizen have been kidnapped by pirates from a Greek-flagged tanker in the Africa’s Port of Lome, Togo Terminal.
Georgia’s Maritime Transport Agency reports that the pirates have not contacted them yet.
The agency constantly contacts with the Greek ship-owner company. As soon as the company has any news, they will inform us”, said Zaza Makharadze, First Deputy Director at Georgia’s Maritime Transport Agency.
Zaza Makharadze mentioned that Togo Terminal is one of the safest ports in Africa. Besides, there were armed guards on the tanker and its unknown how the pirates could have gotten on board and took hostages.
Mostly pirates appear a few days after the accident and demand a ransom.
Georgia’s Maritime Transport Agency says that the Greek company has had the experience of dealing with pirates and will try to protect the safety of the hostages.
We have already contacted the family members of the Georgian hostages. However, it is important not to spread the identifying information through the media”, says the statement of the Maritime Transport Agency.
Two of the kidnapped sailors are from the Republic of the Philippines and one from Greece.
