Ministry of Education implements new projects to develop student tech skills

The Georgian Ministry of Education and the National Communications Commission are implementing five new projects in 2019 to help students develop technology skills.

Education Minister Mikheil Batiashvili held a presentation today to introduce the new projects.

With our reform, we will ensure that computer skills are taught at an early age. Computer programming plays very a essential role in our everyday lives”, stated Batiashvili.

During the presentation the ministry introduced further reforms at schools:

  • Computer classes will be renewed in 50 schools and be equipped with Wi-Fi.
  • Digital educational resources will be made available in schools as a result of cooperation with Microsoft and Tallinn University.
  •  Georgian online library www.el.ge will be updated.

The projects were selected taking into consideration European experience in the field.

The projects will help students develop the following skills:

  • developing basic computer science skills
  • evaluating and analysing online information
  • identifying fake information
  • evaluating information sources critically

I want to mention a project called Hello, Ruby! It is a Finnish book series, which aims to develop basic skills in computer science and evaluating information critically. Teaching using the book will start by September 2019 in selected schools”, stated Head of Media Literacy Department Khatuna Ivanishvili.

The National Communications Commission implemented the Media Literacy Department in 2018 to develop media literacy amongst the public.
