Georgian Dream wins five seats out of six in the municipal elections run-off

The Georgian Dream ruling party has won five election districts out of six in the municipal election run-off yesterday, Georgia’s Central Election Commission has announced its preliminary figures.

The ruling party candidates won in Kutaisi, Kazbegi, Khashuri, Borjomi and Martvili, while an independent candidate was able to defeat the Georgian Dream nominee in Ozurgeti with 50.11 percent of votes.

  • The Georgian Dream candidate in Kutaisi received 87.55 percent of votes and his opponent Grigol Vashadze from the United National Movement - 12.45 percent of votes. Vashadze did not participate in the run-off as the UNM boycotted the process. However, ballot papers had already been printed and names of the opposition candidates remained on the papers.
  • The Georgian Dream candidate in Kazbegi Aleksandre Zagashvili received 68,65 percent of votes and his opponent from the Democratic Movement-United Georgia Sandro Kamarauli - 31,35 percent of votes.
  • The Georgian Dream candidate in Borjomi Levan Lipartia received 55,22 percent of votes and his opponent from the Alliance of Patriots Zaza Chachanidze - 44,78percent of votes.
  • The Georgian Dream candidate in Martvili Aleksandre Grigalava received 93,04 percent of votes and his opponent from the United National Movement Mamuka  Danelia - 6,96percent of votes.
  • The Georgian Dream candidate in Ozurgeti Beglar Sioridze received 49,89 percent of votes, while his independent opponent Konstantine Sharashenidze obtained 50,11 percent of votes.

The run-off was held as in the six election districts none of the candidates could receive more than 50 percent of mandatory votes in the October 21 municipal elections.
