The contemporary Georgian alphabet is a point of interest for many intrigued by its unique design, and now its 33 letters have been made to briefly explain some of the key points about the country.

Georgia Made by Characters, a short video animation, presents each of the alphabet's letters selected to represent a certain word of cultural, historical or social meaning for Georgia.

The four-minute video presents the 'B' with Bassiani — the name of a medieval battle and the basis for the name of Tbilisi's famed underground club — and the 'R' of Rustaveli, the name of the country's famed 12th century poet, among other examples.

The choices of selected words are emphasised with visual illustration, such as the graphic of a qvevri wine storage vessel around the letter 'Gh' — the first character in the Georgian word ghvino, for wine.

Created to mark Georgia taking over the status of the Guest of Honour of the Frankfurt Book Fair from France, the video was released by the Georgian National Book Centre and the Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection of the country.

Georgia will become the Guest of Honour of the major book event for its 2018 edition, while the handover of the status will take place next Sunday, the conclusive day of this year's fair.

The three writing systems of the Georgian alphabet — of which the one presented in the video is used in the current formal writing — was added to UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity last year.
