Georgia wins first gold at 2015 European Games

Avtandil Tchrikishvili is world and European champion in judo and was named as the best Georgian sportsman of 2014.

The Georgian national anthem has been heard in Baku, Azerbaijan after a Georgian athlete won a gold medal at the 2015 European Games.

Yesterday Georgian Judoka Avtandil Tchrikishvili (81kg) beat Russia’s Ivan Napotov in the final bout, which saw Georgia earn its first gold medal at the inaugural competition.

Tchrikishvili is the current world and European champion in judo. He was named Georgia's sportsman of the year in 2014. 

Also yesterday another Georgian judoka Nugzar Tatalashvili (71kg) gained a silver medal at the European Games.

After 15 days of competition, Georgia has won one gold, four silver and eight bronze medals and its first record, which came from athlete Bachana Khorava who gained first place in the team competition in the men’s long jump.

More than a hundred Georgian athletes are competing in the inaugural competition across 17 sports from June 12-28. The Georgian athletes are among 6,000 athletes from 50 countries participating in the Games, which will reveal the best athletes across 20 sports.

The international competition continues in the capital of Azerbaijan until June 28.
