Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Saturday unveiled an international-standard ice arena in the Black Sea city of Batumi in the western Adjara region.
Kobakhidze, along with Tornike Rizhvadze, the Chair of the Adjara Regional Government, inspected completed works at the venue and met with athletes.
This is significant infrastructure for the entire country and specifically for Batumi. About 450 young people are involved in this sport in Batumi, and the new arena will give children and young people a new incentive to get even more actively involved in this type of sport”, the PM said.
The ice arena, also featuring a swimming pool set to start operating by the end of 2024, is equipped with sports lighting, a scoreboard, sound systems, as well as conference and choreography halls, rooms for coaches and referees, changing rooms, and sanitary facilities.
The arena, providing seating for 1,500 spectators, will host the 2025 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival from Sunday onwards.
Starting next year, the sports complex will have the capacity to host international competitions in figure skating, mass ice skating, as well as ice and water sports.
The total project cost is ₾53,943,280 [$19,4mln].
