Georgian Public Defender Levan Ioseliani on Wednesday met with Michael O' Flaherty, the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe, to discuss the situation of human rights protection in the country, the Public Defender’s Office said on Thursday.
The Office said the meeting also covered the level of protection of freedom of assembly and expression, as well as the cases of disproportionate use of force, violence, and ill-treatment by law enforcement officers during dispersals of public protests in capital Tbilisi against the Government's decision late last year not to include the European Union accession talks on its agenda until 2028.
The meeting was also attended by Tamar Gvaramadze and Elene Ghudushauri, the deputy public defenders, Giancarlo Cardinale, the Director of the Office of the CoE Commissioner for Human Rights, and the Commissioner’s advisors Agata Nieboj and Roemer Lemaitre.
