Georgian Public Defender Levan Ioseliani and Didier Trebucq, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in the country, on Friday discussed the situation of human rights protection in Georgia, the Public Defender’s Office said.

At the meeting, which was also attended by Vladimir Shkolnikov, the Senior Human Rights Adviser for the South Caucasus Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the parties reviewed the implementation of the anti-discrimination mechanism, as well as the conditions of children, women and persons with disabilities in Georgia.

Ioseliani highlighted the statistics of femicide cases and pointed out the necessity to strengthen preventative measures against the murders of women.

The conversation also touched on the needs of the population living near the occupation line in the country’s Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia), the illegal ‘borderisation’ process on the territory of Georgia, and security challenges.

The  Public Defender also emphasised the long-term relationship between the institutions and discussed future plans for cooperation.
