Georgian PM “deeply saddened” by death of two-time Olympic champion, wrestler Levan Tediashvili

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Saturday said he was “deeply saddened” by the death of legendary Georgian wrestler, two-time Olympic, four-time world and three-time European champion Levan Tediashvili at the age of 75.

In his social media post, Kobakhidze noted that Tediashvili, “one of the most titled wrestlers in the history of Georgia, has made a name for his homeland and left an indelible mark” in the sports world.

The PM extended his condolences to Tediashvili’s family, relatives, his supporters and “the entire Georgian society”.

 

 

Tediashvili is the only wrestler who became champion in three different weight categories - he won the Olympics and World Championships in 82 and 90 kg and became the European champion in the 100 kg category.

He received the Vakhtang Gorgasali First Degree Medal and was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of Tbilisi. Georgian wrestler has been included in the International Wrestling Federation’s Hall of Fame since 2005.
