The newly appointed Georgian Defence Minister Irakli Chikovani on Wednesday took part in the virtual meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group to discuss the current situation in Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian invasion.
The 19th edition of the Contact Group, organised by Lloyd Austin, the United States Secretary of Defence, was attended by defence ministers and high-ranking military personnel from 50 countries, reviewing initiatives to provide the country with coordinated military assistance in combating the ongoing Russian offensives.
The Contact Group of Ukraine was formed at the initiative of the US and the inaugural gathering was held at the US Ramstein Air Base in Germany in April 2022.
A Georgian delegation chaired by the country’s Defence Minister Juansher Burchuladze on Tuesday joined more than 50 top military officials from NATO member and allied states in Brussels to discuss assistance to Ukraine amid its ongoing defence from the Russian invasion.
Mamuka Mdinaradze, the Executive Secretary of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Sunday said Georgia was among 38 countries that had applied to the International Criminal Court in Hague to investigate war crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine, which had resulted in the ICC issuing an arrest warrant for the Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Thursday addressed the European Conference of Speakers of Parliaments in Dublin and said Georgia “has demonstrated solidarity with Ukraine not only in words, but also with strong political and diplomatic steps” amid Russia’s illegal military presence on the territory of Georgia.
Maka Botchorishvili, the Chair of the European Integration Committee of the Georgian Parliament, on Tuesday reiterated the country’s “firm” support to Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity and expressed her “admiration and solidarity” to the “heroic” fight of Ukrainian people for freedom.
