Ilia Darchiashvili, the Georgian Foreign Minister, on Wednesday pledged his Government's commitment to conducting “transparent and competitive” general elections this fall after sending an official invitation to observers from the Organisation for Security and Co-Operation in Europe Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights.
In his press comments, the Minister highlighted the observers would be granted the opportunity to monitor the October 26 elections, and emphasised the Government's related obligations outlined in the conditions for the European Union to open accession talks with the country.
We reiterate our dedication to ensuring that OSCE/ODIHR observers are given the opportunity to oversee the elections in Georgia. It is in the best interest of our Government to strive for elections of the highest calibre”, the official said.
The Foreign Ministry on Monday addressed Matteo Mecacci, the Director of the OSCE/ODIHR, with an invitation for observers for the upcoming elections.
