Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Friday claimed there was an “open alliance” between President Salome Zourabichvili and the opposition United National Movement party.

In his remarks, Kobakhidze alleged Zourabichvili had “practically announced the creation of a new party” with her initiative on ensuring “European unity” in the domestic political scene.

“This is their political agenda. Either way, this political force has no chance of success. This is my stance”, the PM, who was confirmed by the Parliament this week, said.

He also claimed there was “no possibility” of the domestic political process being “moved to the street” ahead of the general elections in October.

There is no resource for that. The main thing is that we ensure the stability of the country, we are responsible for that. We have managed to maintain stability all these years in much more difficult times. We promise the society that we will not give anyone the opportunity to develop processes in the country in a different scenario”, he concluded.

Earlier today Mikheil Saakashvili, the imprisoned former President of Georgia, said Zourabichvili’s platform was “welcome”, and added “now is not the time for discussions and mere talk”, but “to get down to business” in the run-up to the elections.
