Georgian PM appoints Interior Minister as Vice PM

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Friday appointed Vakhtang Gomelauri, the country’s Interior Minister, as a Vice Prime Minister of the country, the Government Administration announced.

The appointment raises the number of vice prime ministers to three, with Levan Davitashvili, the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, serving as the First Vice PM, and Irakli Chikovani, the Defence Minister, also holding the role of a Vice PM.

Gomelauri previously served as the Deputy Interior Minister between 2014-2015. In January 2015, he was appointed as the Interior Minister and in August of that year assumed the position of the Head of the State Security Service of Georgia, before returning as the Minister of Internal Affairs in 2019.

Georgian Parliament approves bill banning use of masks, laser devices in public rallies

The Georgian Parliament on Friday adopted in the final hearing a bill prohibiting participants of public gatherings or protests from possessing laser devices or “any equipment emitting sharp beams of light” and banning use of masks “or other means of covering faces”, in a development amid ongoing demonstrations against the Government's decision to suspend European Union accession talks until 2028.
