Georgia's Special Investigation Service on Wednesday launched an investigation into allegations of unlawful interference with the work of reporters of various TV companies at a rally organised by the domestic opposition in the capital city of Tbilisi on Tuesday.
In a statement, the Service noted it was “actively conducting all necessary investigative actions”.
Under the Criminal Code of Georgia, the formal charge of “unlawful interference with journalists’ professional activities” is punished by a fine or community service for a term of 120 to 140 hours or by corrective labour for a term of up to two years, or house arrest for a term of six months to two years.
The same act, committed with use of threats of violence or official position, involves a fine or imprisonment for up to two years, and may be accompanied with deprivation of the right to hold an office or to carry out related activities for up to three years.
