Natia Turnava, the Acting Governor of the National Bank of Georgia, presented collector coins to the national football team to mark the team’s success at the European Football Championship 2024 in Germany this summer, the Bank said on Thursday.

Turnava noted the collector coins would always be “symbolically connected” with the success of the Georgian national team, and handed over silver coins to the football players and gold coins to the team’s coach Willy Sagnol.

She pointed out the NBG had the exclusive right to issue coins for collection purposes, adding “traditionally, the coins are dedicated to the themes important to Georgia”.

One of the most joyful and outstanding historical facts was undoubtedly the success of the national team at the European Football Championship. Therefore, we unanimously decided the theme of a new collector coin would be the successful performance of the Georgian football team at Euro 2024. I am glad for the opportunity to personally present the coins to the members of our national team and thank them once again for their brilliant performance”, Turnava said.

The NBG decided to issue the coins following the national football team’s first-ever qualification for the UEFA Euro 2024 after defeating Greece in the playoff final in March.

The Bank collaborated with the Georgian Football Federation on design concepts that incorporate symbols of the team, inscriptions in Georgian and English, and information on denomination and year of issue.

One side of the coin features the team logo - shown in colour on the silver version - along with a visual of St. George and the motto "I am Georgia".

The National Bank has also issued other coins on sports themes to mark “the successful performance” of Georgian athletes in rugby, basketball, football, and the Olympic Games.
