Officials of the Georgian Government on Wednesday congratulated the Republican Party nominee Donald Trump on his victory in the United States presidential elections.
In his congratulatory message, Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili stressed Trump’s victory signified the “return of common sense in world politics”.
“Congratulations to Donald Trump on being elected as President, which signifies the return of common sense in world politics and the end of domination of perceptions over reality that characterised Western attitudes towards Georgia in the last few years”, the Speaker said in his social media message.
“I believe a reboot of American-Georgian relations will happen on the basis of mutual respect, shared interests, and, above all, the real values of humankind”, he concluded.
Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili highlighted the country’s strategic partnership and friendship with the US.
“A strong United States - our strategic partner and friend of 33 years - is needed now more than ever to support Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic integration, bolster regional security and stability, and safeguard our freedom and independence”, she said.
Kakha Kaladze, the Tbilisi Mayor and the Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, congratulated Trump and claimed the US President-elect did “not share the idea of liberal fascism”, which he said “prevails not only in Georgia, but in the world in general”.
“This is the choice of American citizens and we respect it, just like in Georgia, citizens of our country have made a choice and supported peace, development, prosperity, and a decent European future”, he noted in reference to the parliamentary elections held last month.
Kaladze further highlighted the importance of the relations with the United States for the Georgian Government.
Gia Volski, the First Vice Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, said the ruling team hoped Georgia's relations with the US would “return to normal” following Trump’s victory.
Volski stressed the Georgian Government would continue to work with the Democrats as well, in order for the country to gain “mutual political support”.
Mamuka Mdinaradze, the Executive Secretary of the ruling party, noted he was “very glad” that “peace and traditional values” were “prevailing” in the United States.
