Georgian PM: opposition seeks to delegitimise elections to “justify itself” to supporters

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Thursday claimed the attempt of representatives of the domestic opposition to delegitimise the Saturday's parliamentary elections had “only one simple reason, to justify themselves in the eyes of their own supporters”. 

In an interview with an Imedi TV live programme, the PM emphasised the opposition had to “justify itself to its own voters due to the deception of the voters, and the only way to do this is to talk about non-existent fraud”.

Salome Zourabichvili [the country’s President] said the support of the Georgian Dream [party] was 20-25 percent, the opposition predicted higher results for us - 30-35 percent [before the elections]. In fact, they knew the real situation quite well. When you lie to your voters like that, then you have to justify yourself, and the only way [...] is to speak about non-existent falsification [of elections]”, he added.

The official also stressed that “there was no fact, no indication” that “there have been identified any essential flaws” in the elections.
