Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Wednesday claimed Saturday’s parliamentary elections in the country had been held “cleanly, democratically, and fairly”.
Kobakhidze noted the “openness” of the Central Election Commision as a “manifestation” of the valid outcome of the vote.
The elections were held absolutely cleanly, democratically and fairly in our country, and the openness by the Central Election Commission is a manifestation of that. The elections were completely fair, free, competitive, clean, and therefore, there are no problems with the openness of the processes”, the PM said.
He further commented on the decision by the Prosecutor's Office to launch an investigation into claims of “falsification” of the elections, after the election administration asked the body for an inquiry following claims by President Salome Zourabichvili and other political figures.
Everyone can check everything. We can take into account the calls of Western politicians regarding the investigation, that relevant agencies should investigate all relevant irregularities, and in this regard, this initiative is very important”, Kobakhidze continued.
He also claimed that the elections had been held on the backdrop of “unprecedented external interference”, and further pointed out that “now specific forces need to adjust to the new reality and this will definitely happen”.
The Government head further alleged that the alleged external interference represented a “victory for the [domestic] radical opposition”.
