The Rail Transport Agency of Georgia on Monday said the country had been elected as a member of the Administrative Committee of the Intergovernmental Organisation for International Carriage by Rail through 2027, marking its second consecutive term as a member.
Erekle Kezherashvili, the Director of the Agency, emphasised the significance of the country’s re-election to the body, highlighting it as a recognition of reforms being implemented to modernise Georgia's rail transport and bring the sector’s regulatory base closer to the European Union framework.
Active cooperation with the OTIF helps enhance the compatibility of Georgia’s railway system with the infrastructure of other countries in international transport corridors. This is an important factor for Georgia's effective participation in the Middle Corridor”, he said in reference to a logistics route connecting Central Asia and China to Europe via the South Caucasus.
Kezherashvili made the remark as he was attending the 16th General Assembly of the Organisation in Bern, Switzerland.
The OTIF, founded in 1985, aims to enhance international rail freight and passenger rail transportation processes and establish a unified framework for cooperation in the rail transport sector. Georgia joined the organisation in 2012.
