Hungarian budget airline Wizz Air on Wednesday transferred its six millionth passenger to western Georgia's Kutaisi International Airport, marking a “record number” of travellers served since the start of operations at the facility in 2012, the United Airports of Georgia said.

Irakli Karkashadze, the Director of the United Airports of Georgia, welcomed the 19-year-old student, who arrived at the Airport from Vienna, the airports body said.

Wizz Air is our strategic partner and key player at Kutaisi Airport. [...] We are actively continuing negotiations and cooperation with the company to add even more directions, to have more station jets”, Karkashadze said.

Already in August, Kutaisi Airport exceeded one million passengers. [...] Accordingly, together with the passenger flow, we are developing our infrastructure, and in the near future we will start the construction of a new runway”, he added.

He noted Kutaisi Airport and Georgian airline market were “entering a new stage of development”, adding the body had anticipated even more new destinations and new airlines to operate at the market.

The airport body added the Wizz Air figures “not only reflect the airline’s provision of affordable and convenient services” for travellers, but also “highlight the outstanding growth and recognition of Kutaisi Airport as a major regional transportation hub”.

Wizz Air stationed its fourth passenger jet at the facility in December last year, with the company serving flights to 24 destinations in 15 countries.
