Strengthening of strategic cooperation in rural and agricultural development, biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation was discussed on Monday between Otar Shamugia, the Georgian Minister of Agriculture and Environmental Protection and Didier Trebucq, the newly appointed United Nations Resident Coordinator in the country. 

Shamugia introduced Trebucq to ongoing projects implemented by his Ministry and related progress in legislation, while also expressing gratitude to the UN for its support in the process, the Ministry said.

 "With the support of the UN, we are implementing important projects in the direction of both agriculture and environmental protection. In order to achieve the goals of sustainable development, we have implemented a number of reforms in the environmental direction, supporting programmes for agriculture are underway, which help farmers, entrepreneurs and citizens living in rural areas to produce quality products, get more income and improve socio-economic conditions”, he said.

Trebucq noted the UN would continue to support Georgia and highlighted the necessity of working with local communities and promoting development of the agricultural sector  to achieve sustainable development and reduce poverty.
