Otar Shamugia, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, this week said the authorities of the country had established a legal regulation of waste management in compliance with “European standards”.

In his report to the Parliament on the Ministry’s 2023 work, Shamugia explained the Extended Producer Responsibility system had been introduced for managing tire, oil, battery, electrical and electronic device types of waste.

Four EPR organisations have been authorised to conduct separate collection and processing of the waste and there is also an EPR electronic register in operation”, he said, adding 12,800 manufacturers were currently registered for the purpose.

He said EPR organisations had collected and processed over 11,200 tonnes of waste and added it was “important” to continue implementing the separate system of specific waste collection and expand the list of wastes subject to collection.
