Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Sunday visited the Ikalto church architectural complex in Kakheti region of eastern Georgia to inspect planned repair works at the monument.
Hosted by Metropolitan Davit of Abba Alaverdi, the Prime Minister received information about the upcoming rehabilitation efforts, which will be financed by the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation, the Government Administration said.
The project includes repairs at the cross-domed church dedicated to the Transfiguration of Jesus, built in the 9th century CE, and its adjacent 11th century academy - one of the first in the country.
The planned works involve removing the tile cover from the roof, cleaning walls, filling damaged areas, strengthening the foundation and setting up a drainage channel around the perimeter of the church.
Additionally, conservation work will begin on the walls of the Academy and a retaining wall will be built.
About ₾3.07 million ($1.10mln) has been allocated for the rehabilitation of the monument, the Administration said.
