Timotesubani Monastery in Georgia’s south renovated to safeguard monument from elements

The Ministry of Culture of Georgia on Friday said renovation of the exterior of the Timotesubani Monastery, also called the Cathedral of the Holy Virgin, in the central-southern Samtskhe-Javakheti region had been completed to safeguard the 12th-13th century monument from natural elements. 

The Ministry said the renovation had solved the issue of rainwater infiltration through the dome of the structure, with the monument and its frescoes safeguarded. 

The main task was, on the one hand, to preserve the historical stone tile under copper sheets, and on the other hand, to protect the monument from water infiltration. Damaged glazed details on the lower structure of the dome were restored, the cement layer from different time periods was removed from the facade, and cracks were filled with limestone”, the body said.

Thea Tsulukiani, the Minister of Culture, visited the site earlier today to examine completed works. 

The Monastery is a cross-cupola church built in the village of Timotesubani in the Borjomi Gorge.
