The diplomatic and European Union representations in Georgia on Monday highlighted the Georgian national football team’s performance at the ongoing European Championship in Germany after their exit following the last 16 knockout round defeat to Spain on Sunday.
In a social media message, the European Union Delegation in the country said the team had brought “joy and honour to Georgia and conquered the hearts of millions of fans worldwide”.
The Swedish Embassy in the country joined Georgian fans and thanked the team for their “great performance” at the Championship.
In his social media post, Peter Fischer, the German Ambassador to the country, highlighted the “strong and passionate performance” of the Georgian squad and noted “looking forward to seeing you at the next big football tournament”.
The Italian Embassy in the country praised the national team’s performance by saying “a memorable debut and performance to be proud of by the Georgian national football team”.
Hadas Meitzad, the Israeli Ambassador to the country, also lauded a “brilliant debut” of the Georgian team filled with “unforgettable moments” at the tournament and noted this was “just the beginning of the story”.
In her social media post, Sheraz Gasri, the French Ambassador to Georgia, noted the country’s capital Tbilisi was celebrating “a great journey which took Georgia’s breath away, and ours”.
Dutch Ambassador Meline Arakelian also praised the national team’s performance at EURO 2024.
Petr Kubernát, the Czech Ambassador to the country, extended his “sincere congratulations” to the team for their “first, but very impressive participation” in the EURO football tournament.
The Georgian squad qualified for the knockout round of the Championship as the best third-placed team in the group stage, where they finished behind Portugal and Turkey in Group F after defeating the former 2-0 in the final game of the round.
They also lost to Turkey on the opening matchday before drawing with Czechia.
