Georgia ranked 66th in the world for mobile internet connection speeds and 129th for fixed broadband in December, the latest update of figures in the online Speedtest by Ookla Global Index showed last week.

The ranking measures mobile and fixed connection speeds around the world on a monthly basis, with the new Index showing Georgia improving its position by six positions year-on-year with a mobile internet speed of 37.78 Mbps. The country’s placement went back by two positions with a fixed Internet speed of 26.60 Mbps.

Among top mobile operators in the country in Q4, Geocell delivered the fastest median download speed at 50.52 Mbps and registered the lowest median multi-server latency at 37 ms.

An analysis of performance on some of the fastest phones in Georgia found there was no statistical winner during the quarter, but the figures showed devices from Apple had the fastest median download speed in the country at 46.64 Mbps.

The Georgian capital city of Tbilisi showed the fastest median mobile download speeds among the country’s most populous cities at 36.17 Mbps, while Rustavi, a city south-east of the capital, recorded the fastest median fixed download speed of 27.38 Mbps.

The Georgian National Communications Commission last month said the service for providing fixed internet at speeds of 100 Mbps was 136 percent more expensive in Georgia compared to European states, while costs for mobile internet packages with 10 GB of data and 1795 minutes of talk time were 35 percent higher in the country.

Eighty-nine percent of households in the country were shown to have internet access in 2023 - an increase of 0.6 percentage points compared to 2022 figures - in the latest Survey on Information and Communication Technologies Usage in Households by the National Statistics Office.
