Georgian Deputy Economy Minister Mariam Kvrivishvili on Thursday met with a delegation from the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation to discuss cooperation with the body.

The Ministry said the meeting reviewed the Government’s priority areas in “developing open sky policies and enhancing air navigation safety”.

The body added the “rapid recovery” of domestic civil aviation in the post-pandemic period and its “successful” policy for entering new markets were also emphasised.

The Government’s decisions were credited for the “significant development” of the sector and the increase in the number of European airlines entering the domestic market.

The Deputy Minister also informed the Eurocontrol delegation about the Government’s decision to build a new airport to serve the capital city of Tbilisi. The Ministry said parties agreed to collaborate in the planning process to ensure the airport meets modern sustainability standards.

The discussion also involved implementation of an environmental and social management system in air navigation, with the sides emphasising civil aviation’s “crucial role” in global efforts against climate change and its contribution to the transition to a zero-carbon economy in the long term.

Georgia’s air navigation service provider Sakaeronavigatsia is set to play a “significant role” in implementing Georgia’s long-term low-emission development plan and decarbonisation, they also noted.
