The Personal Data Protection Service on Wednesday said it would study the legality of processing citizens' telephone numbers by unknown individuals, after several citizens received phone calls from both foreign and Georgian numbers, in which the callers used “hateful and abusive” language towards them.

Since Tuesday the citizens have been contacted on their personal phone numbers regarding their protest of the controversial domestic bill on transparency of foreign influence, the Service noted.

Several activists, journalists, bloggers and citizens, protesting the transparency bill, which calls for the registration of non-commercial legal entities and media outlets in the country as “pursuing the interests of a foreign power” if they derive more than 20 percent of their funding from abroad, have received threatening calls from unknown callers.
