Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Friday said Germany was a “special friend and partner” of Georgia, as well as one of the “main and strong” supporters of the country’s European integration.

In his comments to the media in Berlin, within the scope of Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s visit to the country, Darchiashvili emphasised it was important that the PM’s first official trip to the European Union member states began in Germany.

The FM stressed Germany’s support was “not just expressed in words but in actions as well”, citing its active involvement in the decision of the European Council to grant Georgia the EU membership candidate status last year.

Kobakhidze’s visit was “very timely, important and necessary”, Darchiashvili said, pointing out that the PM had discussed bilateral cooperation “in all dimensions” with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Darchiashvili also pointed out that Scholz had affirmed Germany’s support for Georgia's European integration would continue in the future too.

Georgia is committed to the reform agenda that we have with the EU. The country actively continues to implement them, as they are necessary for the development, the country’s future and European integration”, the FM added.

As part of the visit to Berlin, the head of the Georgian Government and German Chancellor on Friday discussed the “high level” of political dialogue and “positive dynamics” of bilateral relations. Kobakhidze also met with the country’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Bärbel Bas, the President of the Bundestag.
