Georgian Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Spanish officials discuss ties

Nikoloz Samkharadze, the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Georgian Parliament, and a delegation of the Committee on Wednesday met Spanish officials during their visit to the country to discuss political and economic ties between the two countries.

The Georgian Parliament said the meeting featured Javier Maroto, the first Vice President of the Senate of Spain, José Ignacio Landaluce Calleja, the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee and José Manuel Rey Varela, the Chair of the Defence Committee.

The body said the meeting also discussed “full utilisation” of the potential of the Middle Corridor, a logistics route connecting Central Asia and China to Europe via the South Caucasus, and Georgia’s “important role” in ensuring connectivity between Europe and Asia.

The officials also noted the country's accession to the European Union and NATO and reforms implemented by the country in the process, also discussing matters of regional security and the ongoing Russian aggression in Ukraine and its consequences.

Samkharadze informed his Spanish counterparts on the “difficult situation” in Georgia’s Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia), threats originating from Russia and the domestic political situation of the country.
