Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Monday instructed the country’s Ministry of Economy to facilitate additional direct flights to Germany for the upcoming European Football Championship.

Kobakhidze told the weekly Government meeting ensuring the flights was “important both for the fans and for the success of the national football team”, following the squad’s first-ever qualification for the upcoming tournament.

From June 18, the Georgian football team will have matches at the European Championship, and there is already a very high demand for airline tickets. The law of economics is that demand determines supply, therefore, prices for the airline tickets have increased, and in some cases the prices have increased several times”, he said.

“I would like to ask the Ministry of Economy to start working to provide additional direct flights to Düsseldorf and Hamburg, and it is important that the airline tickets are offered at a fixed low rate to our fellow citizens”, he noted.

The PM also stressed “the more Georgian fans attend football matches, [...] the better it is for the success of the football team”.

He further said he was confident the team could qualify for the playoff stage of the tournament, and added “we have to do our best to contribute to that”.

Georgia will play Czech Republic, Turkey and Portugal in Group F of the tournament.
