Irakli Kobakhidze, the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Wednesday said China “recognises Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity”, in comments following his party's recent visit to the country.

In his interview for the domestic Imedi TV, the official also emphasised China's “unique status as a superstate”, which he said had “maintained peace for decades”.

He further lauded China as one of the largest countries, the second-largest economy of almost 20 trillion dollars and experiencing “unprecedented economic progress”, which he claimed also strengthened its political influence.

From an economic standpoint, Kobakhidze stressed the significance of deepening trade and economic relations with China, noting “economically, this is the number two economy globally”.

The development of trade and economic relations can have serious consequences for our economic progress. It would be simply wrong not to use this chance", the official pointed out.

The party Chair also discussed specific projects within the ongoing cooperation with China and stressed the cooperation could be “further strengthened”.
