Giorgi Kalandarishvili, the Chair of the Central Election Commission of Georgia, on Tuesday said the country’s election administration and other agencies would implement “all procedures” to ensure votes by compatriots residing abroad in the 2024 parliamentary elections.
In his remarks, Kalandarishvili noted the participation of voters from abroad was regulated by the election law, and “the election legislation imperatively states the terms, rules, and procedures that are defined for various agencies in this direction”.
Polling stations are established one month before the election day. To have an accurate list during the election period, the relevant agency will provide us with information about the persons on consular registration, which will become a further basis for the commission to discuss the creation of polling stations in specific locations [abroad]”, he said.
The official added the use of electronic technology in the upcoming elections would happen only inside the country and without use of internet connection “to avoid the dangers [and] risks associated with cyber attacks and cyber threats”.
Georgia’s Central Election Commission on Wednesday set October 26 as the date for this year’s parliamentary elections and outlined mandatory registration procedures for participating parties.
Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Monday said the Government was “interested in conducting transparent and competitive” parliamentary elections in 2024, and pledged it would “cooperate with everyone who will participate in this process with us”.
Natia Ioseliani, the Spokesperson of the Georgian Central Election Commission, on Friday rejected as a “lie” claims on the election administration refusing to create polling stations abroad ahead of the 2024 parliamentary elections and shifting the responsibility over the matter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Georgian Central Election Commission on Thursday accused unspecified domestic political actors of using the latest opinion by the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe, which recommended the election of the CEC Chair and its members by two-thirds of the parliamentary majority, to “discredit” the body.
Giorgi Kalandarishvili, the Chair of the Central Election Commission, on Tuesday provided representatives from 40 political parties with a detailed overview of electronic voting technologies, the CEC said.
