Commercial banks in Georgia loaned ₾44.47 billion ($16.9 bln) and received deposits of ₾43.64 billion ($16.5 bln) in January 2023, the latest data from the National Bank of Georgia shows.

The volume of loans decreased by 0.71 percent compared to the previous month, while the number of deposits increased by 2.84 percent month-on-month.

Last month, the volume of term deposits increased by 2.84 percent, while on-demand deposits decreased by 3.97 percent, the NBG also said.

Loans taken out in the national currency amounted to ₾7.37 billion ($2.8 bln) while loans in foreign currencies constituted ₾12.37 billion ($4.7 bln).

In other figures, the total assets of Georgian commercial banks decreased by 3.7 percent and constituted ₾67.7 billion ($25.7 bln).

There were 14 commercial banks in Georgia - 13 of them foreign-owned entities - as of the end of January 2023
