Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Monday said his Government “must continue to protect the national interests” and pursue objectives in service of the needs of “our people and country”.

At the weekly Government meeting, Garibashvili said “there would be no discussions about economic prosperity” had his team “taken other steps” amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine, in reference to criticisms by a part of the domestic opposition about Georgia not imposing economic sanctions on the Kremlin.

Once again I want to tell our public, to emphasise how important our policy is. Everything is related to the national security of our country. If we had taken other steps, we understand very well that there would be no discussions about economic prosperity at all”, the head of the Government said.

“I attended the Munich Security Conference. You see, the situation is very difficult - there is no way out, they don't know when the war in Ukraine will end. In general, there is no solution in this situation. So we must continue to protect the national interests of our country and pursue those interests that only our people and country need”, he told the meeting.
