Irakli Kobakhidze, the Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Tuesday said the opening of the talks for Georgia’s accession to the European Union was planned for December next year.

Kobakhidze noted the ruling team had started working on the implementation of the recommendations set out by the European Commission, and further expressed his hope that the negotiations would be opened within a year.

Ukraine and Moldova were granted the membership candidate status in June last year and negotiations were opened in a year and a half. In our case, we think that the negotiations will be opened sooner”, he said.

“With the information we have directly from our European partners, in December [of 2024] it is planned to discuss this matter at the level of the European Commission and the European Council. That is, one year after the granting of the status”, the party official noted.

Kobakhidze on Monday said all nine priorities set out by the European Commission for opening European Union accession talks with the country would be fulfilled, pledging the ruling party would present a “detailed plan” on their implementation.
