The German Bundesrat on Friday recognised Georgia and Moldova as safe countries of origin, leading to a rapid procession of asylum seeker applications from the countries and effective reduction of illegal migration.
The legislative body said the decision would create a basis for signing migration-related agreements with both countries and increasing “the existing good cooperation” in this regard.
As stated by the German Government, the recognition level of asylum seekers from Georgia and Moldova in the first half of 2023 was about 0.1 percent, and 15 percent out of the rejected applications from asylum seekers were from Georgia and Moldova.
Last month, Peter Fischer, the German Ambassador to Georgia, announced his Government’s decision to classify Georgia as a safe country of origin, leading to Georgian citizens seeking asylum in Germany having to prove they are being persecuted or having their individual and human rights violated in their home country.
