Maka Botchorishvili, the Chair of the European Integration Committee of the Georgian Parliament, on Friday said the decision of the European Council to grant the country the bloc’s membership candidate status on Thursday was “based on the will of Georgian citizens”.

In her remarks over the matter, Botchorishvili noted the outcome was also the “merit” of the Georgian Government and EU member states.

She credited the Government with having created conditions for the bloc to “seriously discuss” the country's accession.

Yesterday's decision is truly a historic decision for Georgia and the European Union. This is a decision that actually paves the way for Georgia's membership in the European Union”, Botchorishvili said.

The Committee Chair added the ruling team was “fully prepared” to continue working on the integration process.
